"Two other works with an unexpected quirkiness are an enigmatic diagram by Matt Moriarty and a very large sculpture by Jeff Drabble.
Moriarty sees a parallel between the different bones that make up the human skull and this country’s list of national parks, and whether one is persuaded by the metaphor or not, he has made a fascinating rich, complicated and inventive image, correlating the two sorts of organic shape."

Extract from John Hurrell's judges speech at the Waikato Musuem, 5th August 2011.

AUGUST 2011 - 'BONE PARK' EXHIBITING IN LATE SEPTEMBER AT SANDERSON CONTEMPORARY ART, AUCKLAND

This body of work looks at the role of New Zealand’s National Parks in terms of our cultural identity. It was born largely in reaction to our National Parks mining resource potential being politically examined in a ‘stocktake’ recently for economic wealth.
Semiotics plays a large part in the ability for this body to communicate meaning. The work comprises of signs and symbols that are familiar to us - the DOC track marker, the human cranium and the forward slash glyph.
By interpreting their relationship relative to one another and with consideration for their existing meaning and usage, a dialogue forms not only for the work itself, but for the topical debate.
